Exterior

In 2018, the Honda Accord underwent a big-time redesign that brought in a more premium look. With this upgraded look, the 2019 Accord has more mature feel to it with its more flat-nosed front end, a wide chrome strip on the front, and an almost coupe-like swoop to the roofline without impeding on rear-seat headroom.

The Malibu went through its last redesign in 2016, but Chevy gave it a comprehensive refresh for 2019. The 2019 Malibu refresh includes new headlights, a wider and bolder grille, updated fog lights, new front and rear bumpers, and new exhaust outlets. This update made an already sharp-looking midsize sedan look even better and more tuned toward a younger crowd. For those who want a little more sportiness, there is the RS trim with various black accents.

In terms of size, the Accord has a shorter body and is shorter from tip to tail, but it is 0.3 inches wider. It is also up to 205 pounds heavier than the Malibu.

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Honda Accord is not overly special for its class, but it features a more upscale and detailed cabin than some of its competition, the 2019 Malibu included. Area where the 2019 Accord stands out include its wider climate-control area, floating infotainment screen, and horizontally oriented air vents, which all visually widen the dash. The Honda Accord also boasts tons of premium features, including leather upholstery, wood trim, a 450-watt audio system, a high-resolution touchscreen, and more.

The 2019 Chevy Malibu’s interior is a bit of a letdown next to its angular and sporty body. It comes with a traditional midsize sedan cabin with minimal flair. While this may be too boring for you, the older buyers will appreciate the interior’s simplicity. Despite its more basic-looking interior, there are still plenty of available premium features inside the 2019 Malibu, including a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

In terms of roominess, the 2019 Accord wins a few battles, including front hip rom, rear legroom, and rear hip room, but the Malibu wins every other measurable. In the trunk, though, the Accord comes back with an extra 0.9 cubes of space.

  • Big rear legroom advantage
  • Roomier trunk

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Malibu

  • Plenty of standard features and advanced tech

Performance

The 2019 Honda Accord and 2019 Chevy Malibu each have two personalities: a calm, fuel efficient side and a wilder side. The calm fuel efficient side comes with the Accord’s standard 192-horsepower 1.5-liter engine and the Malibu’s 163-horsepower 1.5-liter engine. The wilder sides come out with their optional engines.

The Accord’s optional 2.0-liter engine delivers 252 horsepower and launches it to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. The Malibu’s optional unit is also a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and it launches this midsize sedan to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. The issue with the 2.0-liter equipped Malibu is it is only available in the $32,695 Premier trim, while buyers can get the Accord 2.0T for $30,710.

In the corners, the 2019 Honda Accord is respectable, especially in its more performance-oriented Sport trim. The Malibu is also a respectable handler that feels confident in the corners.
