2020 Honda Accord Vs. 2020 Nissan Altima

By Justin Cupler | October 22nd, 2019

The midsize sedan segment has been through tons of changes in recent years, as these four-door family cars have transformed from people-hauling appliances to stylish rigs with surprising performance. Two revolutionary models in this segment are the 2020 Honda Accord and the 2020 Nissan Altima.

Which is the better buy for our Rochester area shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Nissan Altima went through a full redesign in 2019, bringing in a brand-new sportier look that included a lower and wider V-motion grille, new wheel options, and more. On top of the sportier look, the Altima also gained a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that bumped its performance, but we’ll get to that later.

The 2020 Nissan Altima’s base trim, the S grade, is relatively simple on the outside with its standard 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, active grille shutters, automatic-on/off halogen headlights, power side-view mirrors, chrome V-motion grille, chrome door handles, body-color mirrors, a body-color rear diffuser, and more. As you move into higher trims, the Altima gets flashier wheels and sporty touches, but the price balloons too.

The 2020 Honda Accord went through its last redesign just a year before the Altima in 2018. This update brought in a whole new take on this sedan with a more sophisticated appearance thanks to its flat grille, wider headlights, sleek roofline, and smooth body lines. The 2020 Accord’s exterior boasts a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, a shark-fin antenna, LED brake lights with integrated LED light bars, body-color door handles, LED low-beam headlights with auto-on/off, and LED daytime running lights.

In terms of sizing, the Accord is shorter than the Altima from nose to tail, but it is slightly larger than the Altima in all other measurements. It is also significantly lighter than the Altima.

Advantage: 2020 Nissan Altima

  •       Slightly smaller and easier to park
  •       Sporty design
  •       Even sportier TRD model

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       More upscale-looking body
  •       Lighter trim for trim
  •       Standard alloy wheels

Interior

Inside, the new-generation Nissan Altima takes on a sportier look than before with its flat-bottom steering wheel, bolstered seats, and more, even in its base trim. Rounding out this cabin is a clean dashboard that includes a clutter-free center stack, a dash-top infotainment screen, satin-chrome accents, and more.

Not only is the Altima’s cabin stylish, but it also has plenty of standard features. The list of standard goodies includes remote engine start, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an eight-way power driver’s seat, NissanConnect infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri Eyes Free, Hands-free text messaging, a six-speaker AM/FM audio system, two USB ports, two USB-C ports, SiriusXM, and much more.

The 2020 Honda Accord has a more sophisticated cabin that sticks with traditional styling like a round steering wheel, a focus on horizontal lines, and more. Not that the Accord lacks in style, but it is more focused on attracting mainstream buyers with a family than those seeking a sporty sedan. This focus is evident when comparing these sedans’ rear seats, as the Accord’s 40.4 inches of rear legroom crushes the Altima by 5.2 inches. The Accord also has an extra 1.3 cubes of cargo room.

Trim for trim, the base Accord LX takes it on the chin in terms of standard features with its 1-inch-smaller non-touchscreen infotainment screen, two fewer speakers, manual seats, and lack of standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This sedan does, however, get in a few good shots with its standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

As you move through the trim levels, the 2020 Accord shows off its refinement with additional optional features the Altima does not offer, including a 10-speaker audio system, cooled front seats, in-car Wi-Fi, and more.

Performance

The 2020 Honda Accord and 2020 Nissan Altima are part of the new wave of midsize family sedans that ditched the fuel-thirsty V-6 engine in favor of turbocharged four-cylinder units.

Honda took this switch a step beyond with two boosted four-pot engines, starting with a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder that cranks out 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This engine mates with a continuously variable transmission as standard or an optional six-speed manual gearbox (Sport trim only).

Optionally, buyers can equip the Accord with a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission (Sport) or an optional 10-speed automatic transmission.

With the base engine, the Accord hits 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. The 2.0-liter engine drops this sprint time down to 6.2 seconds with the manual transmission or 5.7 seconds with the 10-speed automatic.

The Nissan Altima has a more traditional 2.5-liter four-cylinder standard engine that produces up to 188 horsepower. Power travels through a CVT on its way to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive is available with a 6-horsepower decrease. This powertrain amounts to a 7.4-second 0-to-60 time.

The Altima’s optional engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.  This engine pairs exclusively with a CVT and front-wheel drive for a 6.1-second 0-to-60 time. While it is slower than the 10-speed-equipped Accord, it gets up to an extra 3 mpg combined.

The Altima also has the added benefit of the SR and SR VC-Turbo trims that add a sport-tuned suspension for improved handling.
