2020 Honda Accord Vs. 2020 Toyota Camry

By Justin Cupler | October 22nd, 2019

Years ago, family sedans were large, lumbering boxes with minimal styling or driving excitement. Today, models like the 2020 Honda Accord and 2020 Toyota Camry offer impressive styling and surprising performance. Which of these family-hauling four-door models is best for our Rochester area shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord went through recent redesigns, making them among the newest models in the midsize family sedan game. The Camry saw its last redesign in 2018, which brought in a sportier look than this class is used to seeing, as it went lower and wider and added a sporty new grille to go along with it.

In 2020, the Camry remains the same, but it gains a new TRD model. Based on the already sporty 2020 Camry SE, the TRD model adds black rocker panels, a black front splitter, a black rear spoiler, black emblems, 19-inch matte-black wheels, black mirrors, a TRD cat-back exhaust, and much more. There is nothing in the Accord lineup that can even come close to matching this level of sportiness, even the Accord Sport, which makes the Camry TRD the perfect buy for a mom or dad who still has a love for sporty rides.

The Honda Accord’s last redesign also came in 2018, but its new look brought in a more sophisticated design with its flat grille, smooth body, wider headlights, and extended rear glass. In 2020, the Honda Accord retains this appearance, making it one of the more premium-looking vehicles in its class without a luxury nameplate attached to it. Where the Accord falls short of the Camry is its lack of a true sports model like the TRD. Keep in mind, a sporty look doesn’t always mean better performance, which we will find out about later.

The Accord and Camry offer plenty of features, and they are far from stripped down in their base models. The 2020 Toyota Camry L comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, bi-LED headlights with auto-on/off, LED daytime running lights, color-keyed power side-view mirrors and door handles, an acoustic noise-reducing windshield, and more.

The 2020 Honda Accord LX matches the Camry L’s standard features for the most part, but it gets a leg up with its standard 17-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of size, these sedans are similar, but the Accord is slightly larger in each measurement. The Accord is, however, lighter than the Camry when comparing equal trim levels.

Measurement 2020 Honda Accord 2020 Toyota Camry Difference
Length 192.2 inches 192.1 to 192.7 inches -0.5 to +0.1 inches

Wheelbase 111.4 inches 111.2 inches +0.2 inches
Ground Clearance 5.7 inches
Curb weight 3,131 to 3,428 pounds 3,241 to 3,549 pounds -418 to +187 pounds

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Camry

  •       Slightly smaller and easier to park
  •       Sporty design
  •       Even sportier TRD model

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       More upscale-looking body
  •       Lighter trim for trim
  •       Standard alloy wheels

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Toyota Camry’s sporty looks don’t translate directly. Not that it lacks sportiness, but it’s just not as dramatic. It is, however, a slick cabin that includes a sharp Y-shaped outline of the infotainment and HVAC section, and plenty of lines to attract your eyes. In its higher trims, this dash gets coated in premium materials, giving it a more upscale look.

The 2020 Toyota Camry TRD’s cabin gets a sportier take with its TRD gauges, leatherette-trimmed sport seats with red seatbelts, red stitching and fabric inserts, red-stitched instrument panel and shifter boot, TRD-logoed black-leather shift, black floor mats with red “CAMRY TRD” logos, textured-metal interior trim, and aluminum sport pedals.

The Honda Accord’s cabin fits its exterior to perfection with its symmetrical design with a focus on horizontal lines. It also boasts a thick-rimmed steering wheel and a floating infotainment screen to complete the package.

In terms of standard interior features, these sedans are well-equipped from their respective base trims. The Camry L comes standard with chrome interior door handles, remote keyless entry, power windows with one-touch up/down, one 1.5-amp USB port, Entune Audio infotainment system, 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, SiriusXM, In-car Wi-Fi, and a six-speaker audio system.

The 2020 Honda Accord LX’s standard equipment includes a 7-inch infotainment screen with customizable feature settings, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, a 1.0-amp USB audio interface in front console, dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows with one-touch-up/down front windows, Power door locks, and more. The Accord LX lacks a touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple Car Play, but it does pick these and more up in the Sport trim, which runs $26,530.

As for interior room, the 2020 Honda Accord is a fair amount roomier than the Camry, especially in front headroom and rear legroom, 1.2 inches and 2.4 inches, respectively. It also wins in cargo room by up to 2.6 cubic feet.

Measurement 2020 Honda Accord 2020 Toyota Camry Difference
Front headroom 39.5 inches 38.3 inches +1.2 inches
Front legroom 42.3 inches 42.1 inches +0.2 inches
Front shoulder room 58.3 inches 57.7 inches +0.6 inches
Front hip room 55.3 inches 55.4 inches +0.1 inches

Rear hip room 55 inches 54.7 inches +0.3 inches
Cargo room 16.7 cubic feet 14.1 (L trim) to 15.1 cubic feet +1.6 to +2.6 cubic feet

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Camry

  •       More rear headroom
  •       Sporty TRD interior
  •       Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       Tons more front headroom
  •       Over 2 inches of extra rear legroom
  •       Much larger trunk

Performance

The Toyota Camry has the traditional midsize sedan engine setup with its standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder and optional 3.5-liter V-6. The four-cylinder pumps out 203 to 206 horsepower and 184 to 186 and pairs to an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers the power to the front wheels for a 7.6-second 0-to-60 time.

The optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine bumps the output to 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This engine also paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels for a 5.8-second 0-to-60 time.

While the Camry TRD milks no extra power from the 3.5-liter V-6, it does boast a TRD-tuned suspension that is sure to give it an advantage in the corners.

The Honda Accord broke convention in 2018, dropping its V-6 engine in favor of a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This boosted four-pot sprints the Accord to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds with the 10-speed automatic and 6.2 seconds with the six-speed manual. That sprint time makes the automatic-equipped Accord 2.0T quicker than the Camry TRD in a straight line.

The Accord’s standard engine is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that pumps 192 horses and 192 pound-feet of torque through a standard continuously variable transmission for a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Buyers who opt for the Sport 1.5T also get this engine, but it comes paired with a standard six-speed manual gearbox in place of the CVT.

In fuel economy, the Honda Accord falls behind on the bottom end because its optional six-speed manual gearbox drops the Accord by a few mpg. With its CVT, though, the Accord gets the better of the Camry in the city but falls behind in highway and combined.

Comparing the optional engines, the Accord 2.0T beats the V-6-powered Camry in peak fuel economy by 1 mpg across the board.
