2020 Honda HR-V Vs. 2020 Kia Niro

By Justin Cupler | July 23rd, 2020

The compact crossover class is robust and features loads of options to fit various buyers’ needs. The 2020 Honda HR-V is one of the roomiest models in the class, making it a great choice for our Rochester area families. But how does it stack up against the thrifty hybrid of the class, the 2020 Kia Niro? Find out below.

Exterior

The Honda HR-V arrived in 2016 with a relatively funky look at the time, but today, it is timid compared to some of the newer models on the market. It continues unchanged into 2020 with slick character lines, swoopy roofline, wraparound headlights, and black body cladding. This simple but stylish look will suit just about any buyer, though folks looking for something fresh may have grown tired of its older design.

If you’re craving a sportier model, the HR-V Sport delivers with a few aesthetic upgrades, including gloss-black mirrors and 18-inch wheels.

The Kia Niro arrived in 2017, and despite being relatively fresh, it receives a refresh for the 2020 model year. This mild tweak brings in a new grille, headlights, and fog lights. Overall, the 2020 Kia Niro boasts a very traditional design that almost looks more like a lifted hatchback than a crossover, which will cater to buyers who shy away from conventional crossovers.

The Niro has one unique model in the Touring Special Edition that includes an eye-grabbing Solar Orange paint job to set it apart.

In terms of size, the Niro is only slightly longer and wider than the HR-V, but the Honda is 2.4 inches taller. The HR-V also has up to an extra inch of ground clearance.

As for standard exterior features, the 2020 HR-V includes 17-inch silver-painted alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, projector-beam halogen headlights with automatic off, two-speed intermittent windshield wipers, body-color power mirrors, a fin-type roof-mounted antenna, remote keyless entry, a body-color rear roofline spoiler, LED brake lights, and an intermittent rear wiper.

The 2020 Kia Niro has smaller 16-inch alloy wheels with full covers but is otherwise similarly equipped to the HR-V. Its standard exterior amenities include dark body cladding, bi-function projector headlights, automatic on/off headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED high-mounted stop light, body-color power mirrors, acoustic-laminated windshield, tinted rear glass, variable-intermittent windshield wipers, body-color outside door handles, a shark-fin-style antenna, a rear spoiler, roof rails, and a gloss-black and chrome grille.

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Honda HR-V is about as traditional as they come with a simple dash that includes a basic HVAC interface with a pair of knobs in its base setup, an in-dash touchscreen, and very few styling surprises other than the long air vent on the passenger’s side. Some may find this cabin a little too toned down, but buyers who prefer something simpler will appreciate what it offers.

The 2020 Kia Niro boasts a little more character with its available contrasting inserts and stitching, large 10.25-inch optional touchscreen, gloss-black dash insert, and more. The Niro is far from over-styled, though. Instead, it strikes an excellent balance for all types of buyers.

Inside, the Niro has a touch more headroom, legroom, and hip room in the front seats, but the HR-V has a small advantage in shoulder room. The HR-V’s rear seats offer an extra 1.9 inches of legroom, but the Niro is slightly larger in every other measurement.

The HR-V’s cargo area measures 23.2 cubes with the rear seats upright and 57.6 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered. These measurements beat the Niro by 0.8 cubes and 3.1 cubes, respectively.

As for interior features, the 2020 Honda HR-V comes standard with a 160-watt audio system with four speakers, a 5-inch color LCD infotainment screen, Bluetooth® connectivity with streaming audio, a 1.0-amp USB audio interface in the front console, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cargo-area tie-down anchors, steering-wheel-mounted controls, chrome door pulls, and a 60/40 split-folding second-row Magic Seat®.

The 2020 Kia Niro has most of the same standard features as the HR-V, but it separates itself with its standard dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and six-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio™ audio system.

Performance

While the 2020 HR-V and 2020 Niro are both four-cylinder models, that is where their similarities end. The 2020 HR-V features a traditional four-pot engine that produces 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque, whereas the 2020 Niro boasts a hybrid powertrain that pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine to an electric for a combined 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

Shifting duties in the HR-V are handled by the typical fuel-saving continuously variable transmission. The Niro’s hybrid powertrain is unique with its six-speed dual-clutch transmission that also enhances efficiency while delivering crisp shifts. The HR-V is available with front- or all-wheel drive, whereas the Niro only comes with front-wheel drive.

These compact crossovers each slip to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, making them about average for their class.

As for fuel economy, the HR-V is quite fuel efficient at up to 27 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 combined, but the Niro’s hybrid system blows this out of the water at up to 52 mpg city, 49 highway, and 50 combined in its base LX trim.

The Niro’s fuel efficiency falls to 51 mpg city, 46 highway, and 49 combined in the LXS and EX Premium trims due to their additional electrical draw. The least-efficient Niro’s are the Touring and Touring Special Edition models, which see their ratings plummet to 46 mpg city, 40 highway, and 43 combined due to their heavier 18-inch wheels.
