Acura MDX Vs. Acura RDX: Brother Battle for the Right to Your Garage

By Justin Cupler | March 17th, 2019

At Acura of Rochester, we have a crossover that suits your needs. Whether you need a two-row 2019 RDX to zip through Rochester traffic or a three-row 2019 MDX to haul the whole family to Fairport, we have the luxury crossover you need.

Not sure which is better for your family? Continue reading to find out which is best for you.

Exterior

The 2019 Acura RDX is an all-new compact luxury crossover with all the latest Acura styling. It boasts the latest iteration of its grille, all-new Jewel Eye headlights, loads of angles and shapes, and a sharp A-Spec package that makes this small people hauler look incredible.

The Acura MDX is significantly older than the RDX, having gone through its last redesign in 2014. That said, it is still a sharp-looking crossover, but it has the newer grille and Jewel Eye headlights that help it look more modern.

As luxury crossover, the Acura RDX and MDX both look high-end from, the outside. They both also feature A-Spec packages that make them look sportier, though the smaller and newer RDX wears this package a little better.

As for sizing, the 2019 Acura MDX is 196.2 inches long, 77.7 inches wide, and 67.4 inches high. It rides on a 111-inch wheelbase and offers up to 7.3 inches of ground clearance. As a compact luxury crossover, the Acura RDX is smaller than the MDX. It rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase and has 8.2 inches of ground clearance, and its body measures 186.8 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, and 65.7 inches high.

Advantage: 2019 Acura MDX

  • Pure luxury crossover
  • Sharp body lines
  • Higher luxury ceiling

Advantage: 2019 Acura RDX

  • Stunning appearance
  • Compact footprint
  • Better execution on A-Spec model

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Acura RDX has all the latest goodies and styling the automaker brings to the table. This includes a sportier three-spoke steering wheel with a split bottom post. It also features a slick center stack with a centrally located, a clean climate control interface, True Touchpad Interface, and a sharp 10.2-inch infotainment screen.

The 2019 MDX features a swoopy dash design that almost envelopes the driver and passenger. The MDX sets itself further apart from the RX L with its dual-screen infotainment screen and extra roominess. While this all looks fine by itself, it really shows its age when compared to the all-new RDX.

In its front seats, the 2019 Acura MDX offers 38.1 inches of headroom, 41.4 inches of legroom, 61.1 inches of shoulder room, and 57.5 inches of hip room. The 2019 RDX beats the MDX by 1.9 inches in headroom and 0.6 inches in legroom, but it comes up short in shoulder room by 1.1 inches and hip room by 2.5 inches.

In its second row, the 2019 MDX offers 38.3 inches of headroom, up to 38.5 inches of legroom with the seat slid all the way back, 59.1 inches of shoulder room, and 57.8 inches of hip room. The RDX comes up a lot shorter in its second row with just 38 inches of headroom, 38 inches of legroom, 57 inches of shoulder room, and 50 inches of hip room.

In the third row, the 2019 Acura MDX has 35.6 inches of headroom, up to 30.9 inches of legroom with the second row slid all the way forward, 54.7 inches of shoulder room, and 40.6 inches of hip room. The RDX has no third row, immediately disqualifying from consideration for larger families.

Three-row crossovers aren’t just about hauling people; they need to haul cargo too. The 2019 MDX delivers a respectable 15 cubic feet behind third row, 38.4 cubic feet behind second row, and 68.4 cubic feet with all rear rows folded. Since the RDX is smaller than the MDX, it has a tighter cargo area, but not by much. With its rear row up, the RDX offers 29.5 cubic feet. Fold the third row, and the RDX offers 58.9 cubic feet of cargo room.

Advantage: 2019 Acura MDX

  • Swoopier cabin
  • Roomier seats
  • Significant cargo-hauling advantage
  • Third row

Advantage: 2019 Acura RDX

  • Sportier dash
  • Sharp infotainment system
  • Cleaner center stack

Performance

Under its hood, the 2019 MDX features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is available as an option. With its standard powertrain, the MDX sprints to 60 mph in six seconds.

Buyers who opt for the MDX Sport Hybrid get a 3.0-liter V-6 engine with a hybrid system that produces 321 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. This engine mates with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Despite the added heft of the electric motor, the MDX Sport Hybrid hits 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The Acura RDX features a 2.0-liter that cranks out 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The power routes through a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on its way to the front wheels or all four wheels with optional all-wheel drive. Though it is lighter on power, the smaller RDX comes close to the MDX’s 0-to-60 time with a 6.2-second hustle to highway speeds.

Fuel economy ratings for the standard 2019 MDX are up to 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined. The MDX Sport Hybrid’s fuel economy checks in at up to 26 mpg city, 27 highway, and 27 combined**.

The Acura RDX’s fuel economy checks in at up to 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined.

Towing capacity in the 2019 MDX is 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive and 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive. Acura does not recommend towing with the 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid.

Acura does not recommend towing with the 2019 RDX.

Advantage: 2019 Acura MDX

  • Potent Sport Hybrid model
  • Better fuel economy with hybrid powertrain
  • More advanced standard transmission
  • Tow up to 5,000 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Lexus RX 350L

  • Peppy turbocharged engine
  • 10-speed transmission
  • Zippy handling
  • Slight fuel economy advantage
