Honda Fit Vs. Chevy Sonic Hatchback

By Justin Cupler | April 8th, 2019

Small hatchbacks are no longer the slow econoboxes they once were. Two great examples of the style and peppiness they now have are the 2019 Honda Fit and 2019 Chevy Sonic Hatchback, as they both offer above-average quickness and cargo-friendly back ends. Which one is better for our Rochester-area buyers? Find out below.

Exterior

The 2019 Honda Fit is a relatively traditional hatchback with toned-down styling and just a touch of attitude in its Sport trim. What stands out about the 2019 Fit is its high roofline that provides tons of room to stack your cargo high, which plays a big role in its class-leading cargo capacity. In terms of features, the Fit starts off simple with its steel wheels and hubcaps, but it shows off a more premium side in its higher trims that feature 16-inch wheels, fog lights, and more.

The 2019 Chevy Sonic is for the younger buyer with its sporty looks that are accented by the standard RS package. The latter, which was once an option, tosses in gloss-black exterior accents and black bow tie emblems. Moving up the trim levels also adds to its looks, but instead of getting more premium like the Fit, the Sonic gets sportier.

In size, the 2019 fit it longer and taller, but the Sonic is wider.

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Longer and taller for more interior room
  • More traditional styling

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Sonic

  • Youthful design
  • Standard RS package
  • Smaller and easier to maneuver

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Honda Fit has more of a classy design with its more upright dash with silver accents. This is further enhanced by its slick three-spoke steering wheel with a split bottom spoke and optional leather seating.

The 2019 Chevy Sonic features more shapes on its dash that give it a younger look. This is accented by its available two-tone dash and abundance of matte-silver trim. While this looks great from a distance, up close, it looks cheaper and more plastic-heavy than the Fitl.

In terms of features, the more expensive Chevy Sonic has a handful of extra interior goodies, like standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 7-inch touchscreen in-car Wi-Fi, and more. The Fit catches up to and passes the Sonic in its upper trims, despite the Chevy’s higher pricing.

In terms of interior roominess, the wide Sonic body affords it more rear hip and shoulder room, but the Fit takes the victory in the most important areas, including rear legroom and max cargo room.

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Massive cargo area with the seats folded
  • More optional features
  • Classier-looking cabin

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Sonic

  • More standard features
  • Sportier cabin
  • Far wider rear seat
  • More cargo room with seats up

Performance

Subcompact hatchbacks are not performance machines in most cases, but the 2019 Fit and 2019 Sonic Hatchback offer a little something to toy around with. The Fit’s 1.5-liter engine cranks out up to 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque for a respectable 8.4-second gallop to 60 mph.

The Sonic Hatchback uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that cranks out 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The latter gives the Sonic a little extra low-end kick to deliver a quicker in-seat feel, but the data doesn’t lie as its 0-to-60 time is 0.1 seconds slower than the Fit. The Sonic comes back with a sport-tuned suspension in its Premium trim that offers better handling.

The Fit is not only quicker than the Sonic, but it also offers better fuel economy, making it a great option for commuters.
