Honda Fit Vs. Chevy Spark

By Justin Cupler | April 8th, 2019

Looking for a small hatchback? Not sure if you should go with a roomier subcompact or an easier-to-drive micro-hatchback? The 2019 Honda Fit is a great subcompact option, and the 2019 Chevy Spark checks in as one of the best micro-hatchbacks. Find out which is better for our Rochester, New York area buyers below.

Exterior

The 2019 Honda Fit is pretty much your everyday subcompact hatchback, but it has a little uniqueness with its almost uninterrupted wedge shape and sportier looking Sport trim level. With its new design arriving just five model years ago in 2015, the 2019 Fit is still modern looking in a class that never goes through many changes.

The 2019 Chevy Spark is the same age as the Fit, as it went through its own redesign in 2015. This generation Spark also brought in a new ACTIV model that boasts a higher ride height, black body cladding, a special grille, and unique wheels. The Spark also features the typical hatchback look, but it is stuffed into an 18.3-inch shorter body than the Fit, making some of its features disproportionate.

Measurement 2019 Honda Fit 2019 Chevy Spark Difference
Length 161.4 inches 143.1 inches +18.3 inches
Width 67 inches 62.8 inches +4.2 inches
Height 60 inches 58.4 to 58.76 inches +1.6 to +1.24 inches
Wheelbase 99.6 inches 93.9 inches +5.7 inches
Ground Clearance
Curb weight 2,522 to 2,648 pounds 2,246 to 2,312 pounds +276 to +336 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Slick uninterrupted wedge design
  • Larger body for more spacious cabin

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Spark

  • Younger look design
  • Tiny footprint makes it easy to maneuver

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Honda Fit boasts a surprisingly classy design for its class with its sharp gray accents, soft-touch materials, and an available 7-inch touchscreen. This is further enhanced by its slick three-spoke steering wheel with split-post bottom spoke and optional leather seating.

The 2019 Chevy Spark’s cabin is more youthful than the Fit’s with its more angular lines and swoopier dash. The Spark takes a hit in the quality department, though, with its abundance hard plastics.

In terms of features, the Spark is surprisingly well-equipped with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more. These are all available in the Fit but only in the Sport and higher trim levels. As you move up the trim ladder, though, the Fit passes the Spark and delivers more value for your dollar.

Other than rear hip room and front legroom, the 2019 Chevy Spark is smaller than the Fit in every measurable. The size difference really shows when considering rear legroom.

Measurement 2019 Honda Fit 2019 Chevy Spark Difference
Front headroom 39.5 inches 39 inches +0.5 inches
Front legroom 41.4 inches 41.7 inches -0.3 inches
Front shoulder room 54.8 inches 50.8 inches +4inches
Front hip room 51.5 inches 48.2 inches +3.3 inches
Rear headroom 37.5 inches 37 inches +0.5 inches
Rear legroom 39.3 inches 33 inches +6.3 inches
Rear shoulder room 52.6 inches 49.8 inches +2.8 inches
Rear hip room 45.1 inches 48 inches -2.9 inches
Cargo room (seats up) 16.6 cubic feet 11.1 cubic feet +5.5 cubic feet
Cargo room (seats  folded) 52.7 cubic feet 27.2 cubic feet +25.5 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Big rear legroom advantage
  • Massive cargo area with the seats folded
  • Classier-looking cabin

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Spark

  • More standard features
  • Younger-looking cabin
  • Wider rear seat

Performance

For the most part, subcompact hatchbacks are not known for their performance, but the 2019 Fit is one of the better performers. Its 1.5-liter engine cranks out up to 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque and pushes it through a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. This adds up to an 8.4-second gallop to 60 mph.

Micro-hatchbacks are even less known as performers, and the Chevy Spark fits that description well. Its 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces just 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. This travels through a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT for a plodding 12-second stumble to 60 mph.

Beyond being quicker than the Spark, the 2019 Honda Fit has better fuel economy in certain powertrain setups.
