Want Safety in a Pickup? It’s Honda Ridgeline or Bust

By Justin Cupler | August 1st, 2018

Pickup trucks and safety generally don’t go together, as they’ve largely been ignored in this area. But in recent years, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been putting them under the microscope, exposing some large flaws. But there is one pickup truck that can handle a days at work and still keep you safe, and it is available right here at Garber Honda.

Our very own 2018 Honda Ridgeline is the only pickup truck to the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. It earned this rating by scoring a “Good” rating in every crash-safety test and a “Superior” rating in the front-crash-prevention test. The only area it struggled just a bit was the LATCH ease of use, but it still received an “Acceptable” rating.

Why isn’t it a Top Safety Pick+, though? Well, it hasn’t been put through the passenger-side small-overlap test yet. To get that all-important plus sign, the Ridgeline needs to score at least an “Acceptable” rating in the passenger-side small-overlap test.

What pushes the 2018 Honda Ridgeline to the top is its available Honda Sensing package that includes automatic emergency braking. This system brought the Ridgeline to a complete stop from 12 and 25 mph, earning it the highest possible rating in this test. Honda Sensing comes standard on RTL-E and Black Edition models.

The optional LED headlights also played a big role in earning this rating as this is a tough one for pickup trucks to ace. But the LED headlights, which are included on the RTL-E and Black Edition trims, lit the road ahead well and avoided blinding oncoming drivers.

So, you need to get work done but you need to do so while keeping your passengers safe? The 2018 Honda Ridgeline is the way to go. Not only is it safer than all other pickups on the market, but it also has a capable 280-horsepower V-6 engine, can haul up to 1,569 pounds of payload, and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
